WHITE PAPERS
White papers are a concise but powerful means of communicating your expertise or viewpoint on a particular industry topic, positioning your organisation as having the understanding and capability to supply solutions for your clients. To ensure you get the best result, I will usually ask for a briefing that gives some core background information on the subject and your solution, and your organisation’s angle on the subject. I would then probably interview one or more of your experts in the area, before producing a draft for you to amend and approve.
Example
Operating and Financial Review 2005: A new era in financial reporting. Client: CODA Group. This paper outlined the new legislation that was facing many of CODA’s UK clients, and the impact it would have on them. It demonstrated that CODA understood the impact of upcoming legislation and had solutions to help clients address it.
CASE STUDIES
Case studies are an essential part of the sales process - new clients want to be reassured that others have used your solutions successfully. To have impact, they must be well paced, informative, interesting and pertinent to the reader. With the experience of profiling dozens of business professionals, I gather information through interviews to ensure that the result is relevant and interesting.
Example
Corporate Responsibility Case Studies. Client: Business in the Community. BITC uses case studies to show potential members the benefit its community volunteering programmes have delivered to participating companies. I have written a series of these, on organisations including Provident Financial, Yorkshire Water, Cattles and Cadbury Trebor Bassett.
BOOKS
A book is a great way to demonstrate your organisation’s domain expertise, create thought leadership or show the depth of history and experience behind you. These can be self-published or may be pitched to a publisher if the project presents a strong commercial proposition. I can take commissions to write, co-author or ghost-write business or general books on behalf of organisations or individuals, and can assist in pitches to publishing houses if required.
Example
Beyond Governance: Creating Corporate Value through Performance, Conformance and Responsibility by Martin Fahy, Jeremy Roche and Anastasia Weiner (John Wiley & Sons, Ltd) Jan 2005. Following a series of corporate scandals globally, legislators have had company executives in their sights – so much so that many business people fear governance is it taking valuable resources away from driving business performance. This book explores Enterprise Governance: an emerging framework, which unites Performance and Conformance to deliver long-term value. Neatly bridging these two established principles is Corporate Responsibility (CR). Beyond Governance shows how to exploit the Enterprise Governance framework to drive business success. It highlights best practice in systems and processes and discusses the importance of culture and skills in achieving flawless execution of business strategy.
NEWS, FEATURES AND PRESS RELEASES
As a journalist I have written hundreds of news items and features. My strength is in finding a strong angle in any story, making it relevant and accessible to the audience. This is particularly challenging, but also critical, in business where stories that might otherwise be mundane can be made highly relevant by linking them to other news issues or trends in the industry sector, wider markets, the economy or emerging legislation. I apply this same approach when writing press releases on behalf of clients
